Legends and tales of ghosts and tortured earth-bound spirits have fascinated humans for thousands of years. These stories awaken primal drives of fight or flight that have kept life on earth safe for millions of years. But it’s more than that when it comes to the supernatural. As the only species on the planet aware of our own mortality, we yearn for proof of the afterlife, existence beyond our corporeal forms. Ghost hunting has gained popularity over the years with dozens of shows and movies inspiring people to pick up a camcorder and an EMF detector. If you’re thinking of giving it a go, or you’re just hoping for a once in a life time encounter, here are 11 of the scariest ghost tours in America to get you started.

1) The Winchester House, San Jose, California

This mansion was once the home of Sarah Winchester, widow of firearm manufacturer William Winchester. Most recently it was brought back to light by the movie “Winchester.” The story is about how Sarah believed the ghosts of people killed by her husband’s rifles haunted her. Originally built on 160 acres in San Jose, California (now down to six), construction on the mansion began in 1884 and continued until Sarah’s death in 1922. She designed many hallways, stairs and doors to nowhere to confuse the angry spirits. She also held regular seances. There are approximately 161 rooms, 47 fireplaces, over 10,000 panes of glass (much of it is Tiffany stained glass) and 17 chimneys designed with Victorian influence. The Winchester house offers several tours lasting about three hours. Make sure to buy your tickets and book your ghost tour in advance.

Or perhaps it’s the unlimited access to nature reserves, mountains, state parks, and wildlife refuges, which are found scattered across every state. It could also be New England’s rising reputation as a culinary hotspot with more bistros, gastro pubs and one-of-a-kind restaurants popping up every day. Or maybe it’s the awesome sense of humor that many native New Englanders possess. Whatever the reason, there are many perks to living in the northeast. Here are our picks for the 11 best places to live in New England.

1) Portland, Maine

With a quaint waterfront, loads off offshore islands to explore, and a blossoming foodie scene, Portland is making quite a name for itself. At its core, this city is a fishing town and the evidence of this is clearly seen on Commercial Street. One of the city’s main drags, the waterfront street has seafood markets and lobster boats docking on one side and specialty boutiques on the other. The rough around the edges vibe blends with the city’s rising reputation as a hipster’s paradise, making Portland a super cool place to live. The Old Port is incredibly charming with funky coffee shops, locally made products, and gastro pub-style restaurants. Whether you’re a Florida resident, just visiting, or a tourist on vacation, finding something unique and different to do can be a mind numbing and daunting task. But if you’ve had enough of the big brand theme parks that are overpriced, overcrowded and more recently not the safest places to spend your time and money, you’re probably in search of something different. Mini golf is always fun once in a blue moon, but it’s always the same experience. So, what do you do to fill your need for a weekend adventure close to home and more importantly close to your budget. Try a trip to one of these strange and unusual Florida destinations with your favorite traveling companions and make some new and unforgettable memories.

1) Homestead Florida, The Coral Castle

The Coral Castle and museum in Homestead Florida has been attracting tourists and curiosity seekers since the early 1950’s. These unique, monolithic structures are the vision of one man, Ed Leedskalnin. Between 1923 and 1951 Mr. Leedskalnin carved and moved over 1100 tons of coral rock to create a one of a kind seemingly mythical wonderland. One of the most amazing aspects of the castles construction is that Ed was only a shade over five feet tall and weighed a mere 100 pounds. No one ever actually saw Ed building the castle, but every time someone visited, there would be new and bigger sculptures. According to local folklore about Ed, he claimed to know the secrets of the pyramids. True or not, one of the Castles features is a 9-ton gate that moves with just a touch of the finger.

So next time you’re headed to California, check out these 9 weirdest vacations destinations.

1) Hearst Castle of Trash Art, Nitt Witt Ridge

Located in Cambria, on Nitt Witt Ridge, this unusual structure is the creation of Art Beal, aka Captain Nitt Witt. He spent 51 years with only a pickax and shovel along with natural materials and trash he collected from his garbage route in the 1940’s-1950’s. Reportedly, some of the materials are remnants from Hearst Casltle, where he is said to have worked. Other items used in the construction include shells, car parts, old appliances, and beer cans. When Art died at age 96 in 1992, his ashes were spread on Nitt Witt Ridge around his favorite redwood tree. Thereafter, the house suffered deterioration and ransacking. That is, until 1999 when Michael and Stacy O’Mally became the new owners. They made repairs, cleaned up the gardens and opened it to the public. Michael gives enthusiastic guided tours for a $10 donation. It’s also now listed as a California historic landmark.
